“The problem with you is you’re a pigheaded fool.”
“The problem with you is you’re a stubborn, self-centered ego-maniac!” Tom screamed furiously at his father.
“I’m sorry to hear you say that Lieutenant.”
Startled Tom whirled, there stood Chakotay. Damn that man, he moved so quietly. Tom hadn’t heard him come up behind him.
“C-commander.”
Chakotay held his hand up to forestall further comment from the Lieutenant. “Let me guess, you weren’t talking to me?” Tom looked down, silent. “Tom,” Chakotay said gently, I wish you would tell me what’s wrong.”
Tom shrugged, still intent on studying his shoes.
Chakotay sighed, “Look, I know I’m not on your top ten list for people to spend time with. But the Captain decided I was going to be your councilor. And I’m trying.” Then his temper seemed to run out. “But I can’t do anything if you don’t speak to me!”
Tom smiled mockingly, “What can I say Commander? I’m just not the sharing type.”
“What is it Paris? What’s messing up your perfect world?” Now his voice was mocking, “What upset the Brat of Voyager?”
“Don’t you dare!” Tom shouted at Ares, who was about to do something to Chakotay, Tom could tell, he had that look in his eyes. He whirled on the commander. “I’ll tell you what’s wrong with me. No one will leave me the fuck alone. I don’t want to follow in his fucking footsteps! I just want to be left alone!”
“Who’s footsteps? Your father’s?” But Tom ignored him, runnning into the bedroom and throwing himself on the bed. Ordering the door closed behind him.
Chakotay tried to open the door and found himself locked out. “Tom let me in.” He didn’t want to overide the lock. That would not get Tom talking
“Leave me alone.”
“Tom be reasonable. I just want to help you.” Tom’s answer was a mirthless laugh.
Ares watched his son sob brokenly into the pillow, unaware of his presense, and murmered, “Aphrodite, you have a twisted sense of humor.”
